I have been unable to load my ipod nano to my laptop. It is a fujitsu siemens laptop, running with Windows XP.
We followed the instructions to laod the Install Software cd-rom before connecting the ipod itself. Whenw e were prompted to then connect the ipod it said "USB Device not recognised" and it is not recognised in Device Manager. The same thing happened when I tried to connect the same ipod using the same install cd to another computer. We were able to install iTunes software and use this. Does anyone know why this is happening? I have heard before that ipods are not compatible if you have any other music software installed (we do have this in the form of Windows Media Player) but we tried rmemoving all such software and it made no difference. any ideas???? |

Try this:
Firstly, do a hard reset of your ipod. (I think you press and hold play, then press menu). remove itunes fully. Make sure the ipod is not connected to your lappy and install itunes (make sure its version 7, if you havnt got it download it from the internet). Then, when prompted, attach the ipod to the lappy. Some ipods are having trouble with earlier versions of itunes. Also, the hard reset should take care of any other issues if installing V7 of itunes doesn't resolve it. If this doesn't work please post back and i'll do my best to help.

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried it, however, nothing happens at all on screen if i press any button on my ipod. I assume the battery has gone right down.... When it is plugged into a computer is makes a feint buzzing/ticking noise, which i assume is the battery whirring up? Nothing appearing on screen though,.,,,,

I had the exact same problem on my 1st job this morning.

That message "USB Device not recognised" may not related to your ipod, it might be related to the actuall USB ports, try another USB device like a digital camera or pen drive to confirm its the ports. In the end I fitted a USB PCI card to get around the problem as I think the main ports were just faulty, device manager showed no problems. A USB PCI card is basically a add-on card that goes inside your PC to add more USB ports to the back. They are cheap (£15) and it was cheaper than messing around with windows for an hour and charging my customer that rate My System: Hybr!d

Thank you, yes it seems it is the USB cable that came with the ipod that is faulty. I triedf it with a friend's cable and it works fine now. Thanks for your help!
