I'm looking for a dvd writer, but I want one thats excellent quality, both build, burn and play quality. I have a Sony DRU-190A at the moment and the image quality of dvd plaback is actually pretty rubbish. The grahphics card i'm using is an NVidia GeForce 7200.Playback quality of high camcorder I downloaded off the internet is excellent and picture quality of digital slr cameras is top notch so I know my graphics card is good enough. The screen i'm using is a Samsung LE32A556 full HD 1080 32@ tv with it connected via the graphics card's dvi output and I have a dvi to hdmi connector which I then use a top quality hdmi cable to go into my tv.

Anyway, do you guys know which dvd writer has excellent playback and writing quality?

I doubt very much that the quality issues you refer to, will be solved by changing your DVD Writer.

Give us some specific details of exactly what type of files have quality issues etc., and how you are preparing your DVDs

Filesd downloaded off the net that are high def and generally a high quality are good, definately, but dvds played through my dvd writer isn't very good uality at all. I definately know orsure that better dvd writers have better lenses and better lasers, but i'm just wondering which ones are good quality.

The quality issues are with dvds played on my computer. Files are good quality. I know my graphics card has pretty damn good image quality, so the only thing it can be is my dvd writer. Saying its definately not my dvd writer is like trying to tell me that a $100 player is as good as a $500 player. With more expensive players and writers comes better parts most of the time.

You still haven't given us enough information to help you.

What type of files are you having problems with .... i.e. .avi .mkv .mpg ??

Also how are you preparing your DVDs ... i.e what software are you using ? ... are you converting or compressing files ?

You mention High Def. .... what files do you have that are High Def. ? and are you burning these to Dual Layer or compressing them to DVD5 Format.

The DVD Writer will only produce the end product, but if the process prior to this is flawed, it doesn't matter how much you pay for a DVD Writer .... and to be honest, whether you use a Sony, Pioneer, Lite-On or LG, the quality difference will be negligible.

I mean dvd movies that I buy, not make myself. When I slap a dvd into the writer to watch it on my computer with my samsung hd tv hooked up the image quality is pretty poor. But watching camcorder footage I made on my camcorder 9 years ago, the picture quality is way better than the dvd picture quality. I'm not on about bruning files to dvd, i'm on about watching dvd films.

What player software are you using to play them on ?

Have you tried updating the Codecs ?

It's pretty unlikely that the Sony DVD Writer is at fault .... more likely a software/codec issue.

upscaling what your computer sees to what you hd tv sees, will give you a tottally different image, i belive your resolution will need to be changed, turn it to the highest your card can do, dont forget windows will be streching the image for your large tv, so changing resolutions will improve this i belive, a cd/dvd is made of lumps and bumps, there is usually no such thing as a better laser now days, most of them are built using the same components, most of the time you pay for just the name.

I've tried using PowerDVD, Realplayer, Windows Media Player 10 and Windows Media Centre and the playback quality is all the same. My resolution is already set to 1920 x 1080, I set it to that when I got my computer about a month ago and installed the GeForce 7200 graphics card.

I was expecting the image quality to be somewhere near as good as a standalone dvd player but god its absolutely miles off.

looking at the model name, i think your using a 32" hd tv for playback, this could be why, please as i have said, turn your card upto the max, unless 1920*1080 is the highest it can display.

It cant be the fact that i'm using a hd tv for a computer monitor because video files watched on my computer through my tv are excellent. The image quality of the dvd movie playback is only about as good as downloaded 'you tube' videos of documentarts that I also download. Maybe a few years ago using a hd tv wasn't very good for using as a computer monitor but nowadays its excellent as long as you use a dvi-hdmi adapter and go out of a half decent graphics card into your tv's hdmi input.
