so my only option at the moment is making the harddrive talk to XP ive just read on the Maxtor site that making my Harddrive Slave should be done with no jumper while on the harddrive itself it says it should be across the top

Your really not getting this are you.

The jumpers are there to tell the BIOS what the drive is and where it can be found.

As the PC is seeing the drive this stage is fine, you do not need to mess with it.

Stage two is getting XP to talk to the visible drive, this is done with disk manager.

Try doing some reading of that link and work your way through the steps.

The help is there, try taking some action with it.

You mentioned in an earlier post that you wanted to try retrieve your data off the drive, but from what you have said since, it doesn't look like this is going to be possible, so as Dave has said, you are going to have to bite the bullet and try something.
Formatting the drive is the obvious next step ..... in easy steps, just right click My Computer, select Manage and in the coloured boxes that show at the bottom of the screen, right click the drive and the options will all be there

Dave dont get snappy im trying to understand this as best i can But with about 4 different things contradicting each other its very hard

My Harddrive says one things, your saying another, my friend is telling me another, and the maxtor site a different thing.

So im trying to make sure im covering my steps correctly so i dont have a really basic error...

And i have tried using the help and took some action but whats its telling me half the time just isnt possible
