Phil,

I have had a look through the link How do I get administrative priveleges on windows XP and cannot see any local users and groups subkey. Is this for XP pro only or XP Home Edition too? I am the only user of the computer and I do not have a password set as it isn't required cos mine is the only user account.

Thanks.

Ok, I googled it and it looks like there was definitely a firmware problem that many experienced for this model. Unfortunately it's an OLD problem and all of the links i have found so far for the update are dead. Is this drive in a Dell computer?

EDIT: If so, please let me know the series, I can't search dell by the DVD model for the update.

Ok, so have you contacted advent and asked them about a firmware update for your DVD? Try that. When I googled HL-DT-ST-CD-RW GCE-8481B 95% of the hits I got were folks asking where to find a firmware update for problems identical to yours. SInce Advent built your computer, they should be able to tell you where to get the firmware update.

LOL I've told you what the likely problem is, firmware update. I've experienced it myself with a computer that had a cd drive that suddenly and mysteriously quit working right. When I googled your cd or DVD whatever) most of the hits I got were folks with a similar problem that were searching for firmware/drivers. Get the latest firmware (either 1.5 or higher from what I could find) and THEN see if you still have a problem. Heck, for $20 (US) or less get a new dvd and pop it in.
