my cd rom has stopped reading discs at all-i've tried movies, cds, and blank discs, and they all don't work.it opens, but when i stick the cd in it won't read it- it makes this weird doooo-waaaa noise over and over again.i've tried updating my drive, but my computer says it's already at it's optimum state (i also don't know where the hardware installtion cd is)does anyone have suggestions for what else i can try?thank you for all your answers, but i figured it out- i just uninstalled my driver, rebooted, and reinstalled the driver and it was working perfectly fine againthanks again for all your help guys

take it into a computer shop or call your computer manufacturer. sounds like it might need replacing. good luck!

You mentioned you updated the drive...have you updated the firmware for the drive.. if not first try updating the firmware and is the cd drive listed under my computer or not...when was it working fine...just try a system restore to the time when it was working fine..

Try updating windows that might have a affect if not reinstall windows but buy a usb memory sticy about 4gb (depending how much space you need back up installers,data,multimedia to that storage device and it should work

Get a cd-based (non-liquid) cleaner by "Maxell", run it in the player a few times, now try playing a disk again. Most likely it's dirt, and/or smoke buildup on the cd lense.

Try to clean up the CD lence by a proper CD cleaner. In most cases that works. If that does not cure the problem then be prepared to purchase a new CR ROM.
