Default My DVD±RW write speeds are locked at minimum. Why?

I own an external DVD±RW drive (Teac DV W58G) with the latest official firmware (H4S4). I went to do some backups using Ashampoo Burning Studio 8 and I could only write at 2x, when I am at the burn window, the drop-down only allows me to burn at 2x and no other speed is listed.

1) The DVD±R media i used are from maxell, imation and verbatin.
2) When i used DVD+R media the only speed listed was 2.4x
3) In Device Manger > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers ,all ATA channels(0,1) have enabled DMA.

Speeds according to Teac for this model are : 8X(DVD+R) / 4X(DVD+RW) / 4X(DVD-R) / 2X(DVD-RW) / 40X(CD-R) / 24X(CD-RW) / 40X(Read) / 12X(DVD-ROM)

Thanks in advance

Aren't those DVD's only x2 certified? Meaning that is the max speed they can be burnt at.

As this is a fairly old drive, it could be that even the latest firmware has no strategy built in, to recognise 16 X speed media.
Have you used 16 X Speed disks, successfully in the past on this drive ?
Have you tried a 4 X or an 8 X disk ?

Also a heavily fragmented HDD can cause slow burns ..... have you defragged the HDD recently (assuming you are burning from the HDD)

If this is a USB Drive, are you running it on a USB2 Controller ?

If this were an internal drive, I would suspect IDE ATA/ATAPI Controler settings were set to PO Mode, but this doesn't really apply to external USB Drives.
