Default Noisy MAXTOR Hard Drive

I've noticed that when my PC (running XP SP2) is processing information there is a small but noticeable noise, which seems to be coming from the hard drive. The noise is like a small 'drumming' sound.

There seems to be no functional problem, just the noise, however, I downloaded and ran the MAXTOR utility (for windows) which gave instant fails on both the short and long self tests.

Drive is MAXTOR STM3250820AS.

Problem or not?

Default Noisy MAXTOR Hard Drive

It's possible it could be on the way out.

Noise is normally a tell tale sign and their testing software failing backs that up I guess.

Maxtor drives are also not the most reliable around, I've had many fail on me.
