Only burns cd's not dvd's

my stepfather gave me a pioneer dvd a05 he wasn't using however he can't find the disks that came with the drive.i installed it and windows xp seems to recognize it as a dvd burner it works to watch dvd's and burn cd's but when i purchased some hp dvd+r disks the drive doesn't recognize them,Have i purchased the wrong media or is it the drivers in xp?

The drivers in XP are generic, so it won't be them.
It could be the media, as the A05 is quite ancient now and the firmware will not be up to date with modern media.

Having said that ... what do you mean when you say it doesn't recognise them exactly ? .... have you tried to burn one ?

already burned a cd works good,but when i put a dvd+r in the drive and try to copy to it it says please put a disk in the drive?

That drive only had read and write supprt for DVD-R, so thats your problem

are u sure about what media the drive supports? when i get a chance i will buy some dvd-r.if thats the answer then thank u very much . i'll post once i get some disks.

Yep .... see here

I had one myself a few years back .... if I recall correctly it could read DVD+Rs but not write to them.

I should have said ... keep away from cheap disks, grab some Verbatims ... these are excellent.
