I have an hp laptop in which the optical drive will play DVDs (media and data) but will not access CDs either audio or CDROMs. You can hear the drive motor cycling through its attempts to read the disc but refuses to play anything. I have tried the usual stuff - driver re-install etc but no luck. I think the next step is to renew the drive but is it likely that the drive would work on one format but not the other?

I assume you managed to use/read cd`s before
You could try using an optical cleaner disc for the cd/reader laser

Sounds like you need a new drive to me ..... they often go this way, especially the slim drives in laptops.

Finally got to replace the drive and it has basically done the trick, many thanks. The machine still displays a few quirks such as occasional reluctance to recognise discs, both cd and dvd, also sometimes will not eject either by the button on the drive or from windows. However, the thing does now read both formats, albeit sometimes with a little perseverance. Thanks again for help.
