Default PC seems to 'lose' USB HDD when powered off

I recently added a SmartDisk Firelite USB Hard disk drive to my PC at work and it suffers from a niggly problem. When I power the PC on in the morning the drive doesn't appear in 'My Computer'. To get the PC to recognise it again I have to unplug the drive and plug it back in upon which it is recognised and everything is hunky dory - until the following day when I have to go through the same routine again. This is not a major problem but something which I don't think should be necessary. As a further test I left a USB pen drive plugged into another USB port overnight and when I switched the PC on this morning it was showing up in My Computer fine but the HDD, as usual, was not. Not sure if it has any bearing on the problem but the HDD in question is powered via the USB port, it doesn't have its own power supply. The PC is a Dell GX270 running Windows 2000 Professional.

Anyone have any suggestions please?

Possibly a driver fault, try re-installing it.
