I have a second hard drive which I use to store pretty much everything on as my primary kept getting full but I just turned the computer on and it kept freezing during the startup but finaly got onto the login page and now cannot detect the second hard drive.
I looked in device manager and disk management to see if I could find it but I cant. Was working fine yesterday before I turned it off but now its gone, plus I seem to have the startup problem too. I tried startup repair and system restore to solve the startup issue but its still the same so Im guessing the problem is linked to why the second hard drive isnt working.

Anyone had a similar issue or know how i can get it working without loosing the data that is on it. It has all my music, work, programs etc so need it bk without formatting preferably.
Ive got a dell dimension e521 with decent memory and processor and vista home premium if that helps.

Had a look at some other bits in device manager and found one of the storage controllers says
'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'
when i try and check for solutions nothing happens and if i update driver software it says it cannot find any.
So im guessing this is the problem and not sure how to go about fixing it. the controller is
'AX53IADO IDE Controller'

No it doesnt come up in the bios, only the primary and DVD drive.
I think the driver for it has gone a bit weird but ive been looking for one for it to reinstall but everywhere says you dont need drivers because theyre allready in windows or something like that.
The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda ST3500320AS.
I found a program that runs different tests on seagate hardware and you can fix any errors but Im not sure if this will wipe the data off of the hard drive

I hate to be the bringer of BAD news, but ...... If the drive is not showing in bios, it is a hardware issue, not a system issue. You could try reseating the power and data connectors to the drive and make sure the data connector is firmly seated on the motherboard, but other than that, there's not much else you can do.

If bios doesn't detect the drive, it is dead and no amount of activity in Windows, is going to help.

Another thing. If it is just that the hard drive has died, any ideas why it keeps freezing when it tries to start up?

It was on the vista loading screen but not on the dell one anymore. I have that sorted now. Thanks for the help philthomas.

Out of interest, does anyone know any methods of getting data off of a broken hard drive. It spins up when its connected to power but my computer cant detect it so just wondered if anyone knows a cheap-ish way of getting data off because I hear getting a shop to do it is fairly expensive
