Default RAW Read Error Rate

Recently downloaded Speed Fan 4.33 as the top of my case was feeling a tad warm. When I discovered the c.p.u. was running at 96ºc I nearly fell off of the chair !! After a good vacuum out the temp dropped to an average of 85ºc, I then found out that the Athlon c.p.u. is a hot runner anyway (up to 95ºc OK) so that panic over ! (Incidentally, Everest Home Edition gives all temp values approx 8% lower so figure I'll be safest following the higher temps for a greater margin of error).

However I then came across Read Error Rate which is a newbie to me, but if I've read it right I understand it's a good indicator of the HD's health.

The readings I'm getting are varying between 62 ~ 64 and I should be warned when it gets down to 25. This (I believe) is a reading that cannot be improved as it's an indication of the HD's breakdown. The thing that's getting me is that apparently the "worst" error reading recorded was 53 so at some stage it has bettered itself. Or am I totally getting the wrong idea ? Can the RAW readings really be improved and if so, how ?

TIA Elmer

Speed Fan is pretty unreliable. Try testing it with another program and see what you get...

Using HDD Healthb as well now, It was more the read error rates I was wondering if I could improve. The temperatures don't bother me as I can deal with them quite easily.
