Hi everyone

I have a 3 - 4 year old AJP 8880E (rebadged CLEVO) laptop, which was initially supplied with an internal Toshiba SD-R6012 DVD ROM/CD Writer.
I would like to upgrade this to a DVD Writer, but the suppliers are currently asking £99.00 + VAT (17.5%) to fit a new one, which seems an extortionate amount to me ? I have seen many external DVD Writers for sale online, but am looking for a fast, reliable but most-importantly LIGHTWEIGHT device. Does anyone on this forum have any good recommendations in this area ?

Best regards
Richard

Hi Helter.

The cost of fitting a new one that you've been quoted isn't extortionate to be honest. You can pay that much, and more, for a thin and light external dvd rewriter. Freecom have a superb one for around 100 quid.

You will save money getting a full size external in a caddy that is usb powered, but it'll just be more bulk to carry around.

My recommendation would be to just bite the bullet and get the internal one fitted.

But if you don't go mobile so much with your lappy then this will do you nicely.

Also, due to the age of your lappy. Are your ports usb 2.0 or usb 1.1? If they're 1.1 then you're going to see really long burn times.

Hi Alex

Thanks for replying. My laptop is fitted with USB 2.0, so there's no problem on that account. However there are so many external DVD writers available online at bargain prices, that I can't see any justifiable reason for shelling-out £117.00 simply to replace the original inbuilt Toshiba !! I just need a lightweight solution.....

Best regards

But I was under the impression the cost of the internal was putting you off this kind of outlay?

The four links you've posted pretty much straddle the cost of the internal.

And of the choice of an internal optical drive over an external one, i know which way I'd go.

Hi again Alex

I think I have managed to whittle down the choice between these two:

http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...ufacturer_id=0

http://www.mediaatlantic.com/search....t=code&xPage=2

They are both what I'd term reasonably 'affordable', although the LG version is apparently unavailable from most large UK wholesalers until 1st October at the earliest.
The Samsung burner initially looked promising, but there were quite a few unhappy comments from disappointed purchasers in the U.S. who mentioned troubles with jammed or unrecoverable discs, due to the slot-loading mechanism failing prematurely ! Not a good sign and probably best avoided by the sound of it ?

Best regards
