Hello, I am stuck in a little bit of a pickle....My roommate gave me her old computer which had Windows 2000 on it, I don't know if it was ntfs or fat but im guessing whatever businesses used for it since it used to be a business computer. BUT....i put xubuntu on it as soon as i got it as i needed a linux box then....she calls me the next day and said "oh and did you get those pictures off the computer" I was like "I'll get back to you on that one" so ya....does anyone have any idea how to recover win 2000 files on a computer with xubuntu on it I'm willing to try anything and I have a wide knowledge of computers but Ive never had to do data recovery before. Any help would be greatly appreciated even if we can find half the photos its better than none.
specs:
compaq, p3, 128 mb of ram, 10 gig drive, and anything else you wanna know just ask

There are quite a few free tools here: Data Loss - Recovery & Prevention

If the drive is healthy you should be able to use about any recovery tool to search for .jpg, .gif and so on.

Umm... Evil not to bust your bubble, but if he didn't install Xubuntu on a new partition, or he didn't back everything up before formatting, then he's probably lost everything for good...
When you install a new OS over the old one, it erases everything that was on the hard drive...
But, as i've never used a proper install of any Ubuntu OS, then i might just be wrong.

Me too. If it was just installed and the drive not formatted then they might still be there.

I 'think' that when Ubuntu installs it wants to make a new partition but am not sure.

hello! i got all the photos back using a program called R-Studio it costs a bit but I have proved it works even after reformating the computer and all the pictures were still in amazing quality. I was kinda shocked so if you want a good program get it!
