Default Recovering stuff from an older hard drive

My dad's computer recently died and the hard drive that was in it is still usable and he would like to get all the old pictures etc. off of it. The family computer is the newest one in the house and has 1 IDE channel on it and one of the two plugs is being used by the DVD drive. Will i be able to put a hard drive on the other one if i set the jumpers right and is it really that simple (being to leave the jumpers off the drive like it says and just attach it to the case and let it start up)?

If you attach it correctly and set the jumpers right it should show up fine.
