If you set the jumpers to Cable Select, they can just be connected up and the IDE cable decides which is master. Otherwise jumper one as master and one as slave and connect either way to the cable.

Any other combination is asking for trouble!

I have had problems anyway with incompatible drives: individually they work fin e but they don't like to share a cable, but that must be rare.

Some DVD Burners like to be the master drive (i.e. Pioneer), so although it will probably work fine on either, it costs nothing to make it master

If you choose CS (Cable Select) make sure this setting is chosen in bios too.

Also the master drive should be at the end of the IDE Cable, with the slave in the middle.

Sorry that was a rather vague answer, basically set the drives to cable select.

Then the drive on the final connector on the ribbon will be the master and the second in line will be the slave.

Ok, just a guess, your moniker was an anagram of someone I knew.
