| Hey. I have a ASUS P4s533 motherboard (sis 645 chipset series) and i want to buy a new samsung 500gb internal hard drive. I am new to installing my own components in computers and noticed there is a difference between the motherboards Pata connections and the newer Sata type connections. Is it possible to get an adapter and so to still fit my wanted hard drive or is it best to just update my motherboard as i know its pretty old now? I havent got too much cash so to keep my old motherboard would be the prefernce! Plus my motherboard has been sound for the last 5 years and if it aint broke.................... Thanks for the help Dave |

| thanks so much for the links. The first converter looks good (and cheap) but says its to connect an ide drive to serial controller. I trust this would work the other way round ie. serial drive to ide controller as in my case? If i set it up like this and kept my old 120gb in the case too do i need to set up the master/slave config with the new drive that i have read about? thanks |

| Yes, IDE, converted or not would require master/slave setup.

| That first conver wouldn't work would it if there is more than 1 drive, as it then has to attach to the ribbon cable and the adapter would be a female connector, but to connect to the cable it would need to be a male connector. Unless there is more than 1 Pata port on the motherboard I suppose, but wanted to make sure before davo57 buys anything.

| I think the adapter is for going from SATA on mobo to an IDE drive and will not work the other way round, there just isn't the room. Personally I'd go for the PCI card, it's a much better way of doing things.

| ahh.. thanks thingie2, i was just re-looking at the two items and thought that myself. Okay, so will instead go for the second option of the pci card. Just to make make myself sure: I'll get one of these PCI cards ( i have 3 spare PCI ports on the mobo) And the new samsung spin point HD (which i hear were really good) Then i can connect the new HD to the motherboard via the pci card and still use the old HD as extra space if needed? |

| No they wont, they normally come with motherboards, you will need one data and one convertor for the power. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/123996 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/84334

| oh sorry, yes the pci card does come with 1 sata lead. And my new-ish power supply has a sata lead so im all set! Just got to learn how to configure it all now! You couldnt just briefly give me a description of RAID could you? Whats 0 and 1? What will i need to use to get both drives working alongside each other? Sorry to be a pain, but might as well find out as much as i can before i begin!! :) |

| If you just want to be able to use the 2 drives in the same case, you do not need Raid 0 or Raid 1

In fact Raid can caiuse unnecessary complications, especially if things go wrong and is only normally used by experienced users (no offence) and for specific applications. This link explains briefly the difference between Raid 0 and Raid 1, but trust me, you dont want it ![]() My System: Home Build

| Agreed, it's not needed in your situation, plus as far as I know you need two identical drives is size, speed etc.
