How trust worthy is the warning that it gives during boot?
It says something like failure imminent and with about 100gigs of music on it, I have started to back it up now, I am going to do a fresh install at some point but it is going to take me a while to get everything off of it Will a fresh install fix this issue or is the HDD just going to die at some point?

Try a scan disk with fix errors and file tables ticked mate, that may sort it.
