Its Windows Server 2003 and its the domain controller in our apartment.

I'm going to use Acronis to rip out an image of the OS and put it onto another system, save me set up time. Got a massive hangover so working myself up to it...

Have you tried another SATA cable and/or tried another port on the mobo ?
