Default SATA DVD Writer won't install Vista

Hi,

Built a new pc with SATA DVD writer and SATA HDD. Just changed the settings in BIOS to boot from DVD first HDD second and inserted Vista DVD in drive.

Message "Reboot and select proper boot device" appears.

BIOS recognises the DVD and HDD as primary and secondary boot devices, so don't understand the problem.

Tried changing the IDE configuration in BIOS to AHCI and IDE. No difference.
Tried changing ATA onboard device configuration to AHCI and IDE. No result.

Hope I'm not in a situation where the Motherboard needs SATA drivers which I can't install because it doesn't recognise the DVD. I don't have a floppy drive.

System details: mobo Foxconn P35AX-S, Intel E6550, 2GB Ram, Samsung SATA DVD, WD500gb SATA HDD

I think it may be a case of .... whether Vista has drivers for your IDE Controller or not, i.e. if it has it will work, but if it hasn't, it wont.

If you have an IDE DVD Drive, you could hook this up temporary, just for the installation and then swap it over, once the SATA drivers are in place .... assuming your HDD is IDE and not SATA of course ..... or you could get the latest SATA drivers from your mobo manufacturer's website and try vLite, to create a new Vista DVD, with the drivers integrated.
The latter is a longer job, but if you have to reinstall at a later date, it will save you further frustrations .

HTH

The DVD doesn't even spin up, so if the Vista dvd has drivers or not, it's not able to get that far.

HDD is also SATA.

I'm surprised that the motherboard is not able to boot a DVD writer via SATA. I mean, how is it possible to build a new system and install an OS if the SATA controller doesn't recognise the DVD writer??...

Lots of people must be experiencing this since most new devices are SATA, bur there's nothing on Foxconn website..

Looks like your right, I will have to dig out my old IDE DVD drive and install Vista that way. Hopefully once installed, I will be able to install the necessary SATA drivers for this Samsung DVD drive.

Seems ridiculous.

The message "Reboot and select proper boot device" suggests your DVD Drive is not being detected in the boot sequence. Are there any other devices set in the boot sequence, other than the HDD ?

As it's a new build, is there a chance the drive could be faulty .... can yo test it on another system ?

No other drives in the sequence. I have 2 DVD writers and have tried both, so I don't think it's a fault with the DVD drive.
