Hello,

I am building a computer with the following specs:

Antec p182
4GB Corsair Memory (PC 6400)
E8400
Asus P5Q-E
750W Corsair PSU
1TB Samsung Spinpoint (for media)
Radeon4850 Graphics Card

I need a hard drive for my OS and Programmes and would like to avoid the expensive SSD and Raptor hard drives. I have looked around and it seems the best alternative would be a second 1TB Samsung Spinpoint (though Western Digital Caviar Black has been suggested as an alternative).

Do you think that 1. It would be a waste of money to buy a 1TB hard drive just for the Operating System and Programmes - I don't really play games, so much of the space is never really going to be used 2. I have heard that placing the Operating System on such a large hard drive is actually a bad idea (though am not sure why) - is this true? If so should I partition, to say leave just 100GB free for the OS and the rest for programmes?

Would be really grateful for your comments and suggestions for any alternatives.

1TB is overkill for just an OS drive, simple answer is why waste the money if you don't intend to use it.

My problem is that all the most economic/quiet/speedy hard drives seem to be the biggest in terms of size. If I drop down in size, there seems to be a drop in terms of speed and how loud they are.

Had a look on the internet and the Caviar Black is supposedly the choice for OS/Programmes but only very marginally better than the 1TB Spinpoint, but then the Spinpoint for only £9 more is giving me an extra 320 GB, though as you say, much of the drive space will probably go unused.

Bit of a dillema. Perhaps, as long as it is not going to cause the hard drive grief trying to find system files on such a large disk I should just get the Spinpoint. Alternatively, I could keep looking around for a much smaller drive with specs that match the two above hard drives but with a price tag that is low enough to justify getting it instead.

I suppose the problem is that the Spinpoint is such a good deal at the moment that it seems tempting to buy, even if much of the space never gets used.

Replied in your other thread.
