Default Smart failure detected :O

right last night i got a pop up saying that my hard drive had a problem and it urged me to back up the files i restarted and it said smart failure detected ??? does anyone know what causes this ... i can replace the hard drive with a spare ...

You mentioned that it popped up. Did it pop up sometime during the boot? Or was it an internet pop up? If it was during the boot, then yes, you should back up any important data and replace the hard drive, you will most likely want to use something permanent, especially if it is the drive that your OS is installed on. If it was an internet pop up, then it is meaningless, though it is always a good idea to back up your important data.

The SMART thing warns you that the hard drive will fail soon. Or, imminently. It's a detection system used by the BIOS to check the hard drives.
