Do you mean which size to buy?

That's down to you, 250 ~ 500 is a big difference. As far as maufactuers go WD (Western Digital) is good anyway, and IMO the best for external drives.

I would say so, yes. Western Digital have a very good reputation, for reliability and would certainly be my first choice. On the other hand Maxtor have just about the worst track record going and would not be on my list at all.

Definatly.

Their prices don't differ so much because some are greedy and some are crap businessmen, it's because the quality of the build is higher or lower (generally speaking, if teres not much price difference you can't tell) and a better quality drive will function better and be less likely to fail, probably last longer too and a have a better resell value.

Throw a 640GB WD in an enclosure.

Or 320 may be more appropriate, if you're unsure between 250 and 500, 320 is good and middlish.

I think their 640 is just a double layer of the 320's anyway?

Depends how much capacity you need ultimately.

One other thing to bear in mind with External Drives, is to site it out of the way, so it doesn't get knocked, whilst powered up, as a jolt will likely kill it, whilst spinning.

Also, if you are likely to move it around a lot, transporting it from one place to another, make sure it is well protected from shock
