Default System doesn't start with an old HDD

When I'm trying to connect my old 15GB WesternDigital IDE hardisk to my relatively new PC, the computer is not getting started at all.
When I switch on the comp the system goes up for a split second and than shuts down acommpanied with error sounds .
When I revert to my SATA drive, the system is working well.
I've diconnected the SATA drive and set the old HD to work as master as well as single.
PC info: P4 3.0, 80GB SATA 512MB, WINXP PRO.

Thanks

Reinstall the SATA, and set the IDE drive to slave, then boot, it should boot ok but there is no guarantee you will be able to read from the old drive.

If the PC actually turns itself off with the old drive in then it is either faulty or physically connected wrong.

If he is trying to use it as a boot device (with pre installed OS) it is unlikely to even if connected right, as I'm sure you are ware.

Yeah I am, with a pre installed OS it will re-boot.

If it is turning the PC off like the original poster described then it is faulty or connected wrong. Period.

I wasn't sure if it was actually turning it off or just failing to boot, with it being a 15g HDD chances are it is ancient anyway and the firmware would prevent it from booting on a new system?

Period? Your flag suggests you are in england?
