Hi there. It's not a software problem, it's hardware. The major difference between a DVD and CD is the spacing between the data "groves". DVD spacing is very very compact and very close together, while CDs are alot wider. The hardware/mechanical makeup of the CD drives are made and to be run specifically on CDs and not DVDs due to these groove gap sizes. After the DVD drives came out, it was able to accept CD discs by increasing it's reading gap, and back to DVD discs by mechanically decreasing it's reading gap.Hope this helps

No. It is impossible to play a DVD using a CD rom drive because the lens were not designed for DVD. You need to have a DVD rom or a Combo writer to play either CD or DVD. Although a DVD can play a CD/VCD because it's design is more hi tech unlike the CD rom which is an old version.

Thats a very strange question to ask but I suppose it needed to be made, you only learn by asking.

Anyway some more useful advice; buy the following DVD drive, it's cheap and will do everything you need.

Review: HP Dvd940i DVD writer - Personal Computer World

Cheap and chearful!

If there were software, which there isn't, it would cost x amount.

DVD drives are like £20 so it would make sense to just buy one of them.

Dave.
