Default Transferring Files

Hi- I am contemplating changing from hardwired PC+Monitor+All in One Printer to a totally wireless set up using Laptop. Can anyone advise the best (& preferably easiest),way to transfer my data from the PC to the laptop?

I did a test on my PC to try a CD route but, apart from my PC not recognising the brand new CD-RW disc(!), my PC tells me I'll need to use a handful of discs anyway.

My XP Book recommends using a direct cable link, but says both must have a 9 pin serial connector. However I cannot find a laptop having any such thing-not that I particularly wish to condition my choice of laptop by this requirement.

(Hope this makes sense).

Any advice,suggestions or whatever?

By the way it would seem that the new laptops all have "Vista".
If,when doing the info transfer I was, in ignorance,to move all or some of the XP over
would it matter or have any effect?

Thanks

And all your data will be fine with vista.

Bare in mind you cannot copy programs, only stuff like photos, word doc's, music etc.

You will also need the program used to create the original file on the new laptop.

For example if you made a word doc using office 2007 on the PC then transfer it to the laptop you will need office 2007 in order to open it.

An external hard drive connects to either computer via a USB connection on the outside of the PC.

Plug it into one PC then save to it, unplug and then plug it in the laptop and transfer off it to the internal hard drive on that machine.

Personally if the item costs around £50 new there won't be much point ebaying it, you'll get next to nothing for it and you may need it in the future anyway.

Yes they would and they are a bit more practical being so small, but they are much smaller is storage size also.

It depends how much data you have that you want to transfer mate.

Just came across this http://www.lindy.com/uk/productfolde...2951/index.php
It's an XP to Vista data transfer cable.

Just thought it might be of interest if you haven't.

Seems I should look on Google more before wasting your time!

Still like your experienced opinions though.

Thanks for your last response by the way.

(I'm certainly getting me 5 quid's worth!!)

You are never wasting our time, posting here helps the forums for 101 reasons, the general one being that without people posting we stop to operate as a website.

We need members as much as they need us, it's a two way road.

Back on topic...

Nice find, it must be a new product as it's has to have at least one Vista PC involved.

But, yeah, should do the job nicely. :)
