the max volume size for a drive formatted in FAT16 is 2gb, but I tried to format a 60gb hard drive to this format. I tried reformatting it back to ntfs, but didnt work. now it is not detected when I plug it in and open my computer. It is not detected it disk management either. It is not even detected in the BIOS!! In fact, my computer (XP pro) will not start up if I connect this drive before booting. However, the drive is detected in device manager. It says it is working properly!! Is there ANY way to RESTORE the drive to a usable state!?

Try taking the drive out of the External Enclosure and hooking it up temporarily as a Slave to your PC (dont forget to change the jumper).
If you can see it in Disk Management, try deleting the Partition (Volume) and then create it again and format it in NTFS.
Assuming all goes well, unhook the drive and refit in the External Enclosure.

Phil
thanx for replying, but I don't see any screws on the hard drive case. Im afraid to crack it open, and Im not even sure if I could put it back together after that. any other suggestions?

You're just going to have to be brave .... look for any seams that may snap open and go for it.

If you do end up breaking the case, it's not the end of the world ..... replacements are cheap to buy.

I'm assuming this is a 3.5" IDE drive, so if you do nead a new one they can be had for aroun $23 here:
