Running XP with DVD & CD writer drive, plus an external CD & DVD writer. Each time I go to write to disk I get the dreaded blue screen and the PC reboots. Ironically when I use a CD to backup a money programme that works okay!

This happens to both internal external drives, (external via USB).
The writing software in use is: Roxio Creator 9LE andDeep Burner.
I have forgotten the wording on the blue screen, it reboots quite quickly!
I have sent for the standard windows report after the reboot and that comes back saying soemthing about there is a version of Norton on my system. I did take out Norton a long time ago and was able to write to discs after that.
I am currently using Avast as my anti virus programme.

Norton can be responsible for all sorts of problems, especially if it not removed properly.
It leaves all sorts of junk around. As your error report specifically mentions Norton, it might be a good idea to download and run the Norton Removal Tool here.

Also it's not a good idea to have more than one Burning program installed, as they can sometimes conflict with one and other. Try removing both, then reboot and reinstall just one.
Personally I have never liked Roxio Creator (known as Roxio Cremator)

Thanks
I did use the removal tool to get rid of Norton and can find no mention of it on my PC
Before I try removing CD writing software and reboot to load just one I tried the following.
I copied a file by simply dragging it to a CD RW disc, that was okay. I then tried to copy the same file by using Deep Burner software but got the dreaded blue screen. I sent off for the error report and got this:
Problem caused by antivirus software
Although we have not determined the specific cause of this problem, we know the problem was caused by antivirus software.

Could it be Avast?

Possibly, but I think it's more likely the Burning software, as I haven't heard of any similar probs with Avast.

Many thanks philtomas, I deleted all CD buring software and reinstalled DeepBurner. Using DeepBurner I copied a file onto a CD disc and all worked well. I trust it will work the next time!!
Thanks again
