Default USB Device Not Recognized

I have an external HDD which has been working fine with no problems until earlier today when I received this message:

USB Device Not Recognized

I assumed that my HDD was at fault until I tried my memory stick and received the same message so it would appear that my USB ports are playing up?

I have tried the memory stick and the HDD in two different USB ports and still receive the same error message - help!

Default USB Device Not Recognized

Try this method, sometimes your USB ports go to sleep and forget to wake up again, M$ supposedly fixed this with SP1 but didn't do a very good job
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type Devmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. This causes Windows to recognize new devices

Thanks for the help, but no joy. Tried doing as you suggested but still get the error message on both ports with both devices
