Default USB Ports? HELP!

I plug in my external hardrive and the light comes on to say it's plugged in but nothing shows up in my computer.
I plug in my iPod and it turns on and charges but does not show up in itunes
I plug in a memory stick and it lights up but doesn't show up in my computer either.

Anyone know how I Can solve this problem without buying a pci card?

reason i asked is so we could give you step by step instructions on how to check in device manager as FORD said to see if there is a problem..

if you click start and click on (RUN) type this in > devmgmt.msc
device manager will then come up on your screen.. look to see if there is any yellow icons if so
let us no what the yellow icons are next to
