Default WD 1tb Ext Hard Drive Stopped

Hi all,
My WD 1tb external hard drive is no longer showing in my computer, it appears in device manager under disc drives as WD. I've tried it on 2 other computers and tried an other usb cable to no avail, I could get PC World to recover the data for £100.00 but I'd much rather pay my self. As a last resort is it a straight forward job to retrieve the data by plugging it into my tower.
Hope someone can help.

Try assigning a drive letter to it.

If not, check this and see if it applies.

You can also boot the PC with a rescue CD like Knoppix and see if it shows up there. If not, the drive is damaged or the partition is corrupt.
