Default WD HD trouble reformatting

Hi guys. Please be gentle with me, this is my first post.

A couple of weeks ago our western digital external HD had a hissy fit. We got a message saying raw files and it needed to be reformatted. Hubby tried to re format, no such luck.He had earlier purchased a disk to recover the data. ( all garbled).

Last week he purchased another HD ( second hand) same size 160GB. Same thing happened, RAW files, needs re formatting. He tried all last night without any luck.

This morning I had a bash, 4-5 attempts ...still no luck.. Deleting logical drive, and partition, several times, creating new ones, still no luck The drive size said... 21.05 GB/ 640.00, unallocated.... total size 661.05 ( from a 160 GB)??In the end I changed the allocated units to 512, after this it re formatted.
I then went to the un allocated side, created a partition, and logical drive there too.21.04 GB and the other side 128.00 (now both logical).

As I type the second part ( 128.00GB, formerly unallocated) is formatting.

I moved files over to the WD and I can access them.
Have I done this right?
Lynn

P.S. hope this makes sense, I'm pretty stupid when it comes to computers.
