Hi - just joined forum & apologies if this subject is in another thread...

Had a WD Passport drive working fine since February this year, using it on Win 2000 (laptop) and XP (desktop) I've never altered, formatted or changed it's operation, it's just used as a dumping ground for various files & photos etc.

Used it fine last night (created a folder & moved some files within the drive) and then today pugged it into the XP USB and PC did not do it's usual recognition and drive assignment with WD logo, instead all programmes went very slow. Blue light was on as usual and could hear faint spinning sound but not "clicking" as I've read elsewhere. Gave up and left for work. Trying it on the laptop exactly the same thing, except it does assign a removable drive "F" but I cannot access it, and an error message comes up:-
"Drive F failed to respond dur to I/O error" I've registered this problem on WD site, but am not holding my breath... thought I'd try yourselvesfor any ideas? - Thanks

If it won't recognise in two machines then it's going to be pretty knackered.

A specialist would probably be able to get the data, but that depends on how deep your pockets are and how important the data is.

You should be able to RMA it, check to see what the serial is on the HDD and enter it here selecting your country first of course:)

does anyone know if the freezer trick works for external drives?
As it might be a way for him to at least take some data off of it?

Lol.

AFAIK the USB connection between the port on the HDD and the actual disk is probably broken. Well, that happened to my friend.
