get a small device on ebay that you can slide in your orignal hard drive, it then shows up in MY computer and you can copy and paste from there, easy peasy! if you need help as to what your looking for, just edit your question to show, if your computer is a desktop or laptop.....ill give you more details if your interested, just say you are. it will cost about $12

Answer on top provides good techincal info. Here is another way you may transfer the data [not the operating system].Get a portable hard drive [100 gb or more] with a power source and USB connector. Once connected to your pc, drag and transfer data to the portable hd.Second way is to burn the data to dvd which holds about 4.7 gb of space on it verses 700 mb on a cd.Nowadays there are web services which will hold upto 100 GB of data for a fee so try that one for couple of months. Yahoo typically holds about 6 GB of space if you have premium account and save it on yahoo briefcase. Inshort you have several choices depending on how data do you want to transfer and save.
