Im using a portable HD and when i plug it in via USB, the computer instantly recognizes it. When i go to device mgr, it says that all the drives are working properly, inlcuding the portable one. But when i go to access it, I cant find the damn thing. I click on my computer & all I see is the C drive. The same thing happened on my old computer. I had another drive that would take forever to show up. It would be instantly recognized, but it would pop up intermittingly under "my computer".

Probably needs to be assigned a drive letter in Disc Manager.

You also might also have, however a suspect bad hard drive
go to your hard drive manufacturers website and download their diagnostic utility (free) and run the drive test program on it

Shouldnt be anything wrong with it. Ive been using it as a 2nd HD for the past few years on my old computer. I just took it out today and threw it in a case and hooked it up. It shouldnt need assigning. Its no different than a thumb drive. You stick a thumb drive in and it pops up almost instantly with whatever drive letter the computer asigns it. My old computer did the same thing with a HD. Just took a few tries. Thats what Im wondering. Why is it taking a few tries, despite instantly seeing and stating that the drive is functioning fine?

It shows up there as a dynamic drive with no space on it. Yet in the CP it shows up as a mass storage device that is working correctly. The drive is spinning and operating normally. When I go into DM, I try to assign it a letter, but theres no option to do so. I would just throw it into my new build, but its an older drive without the same hookups. So I have to use a case and USB to interface it with the new computer.

Have you got data on the drive that you dont want to lose ? ..... as it sounds as thought the drive may need partitioning & formatting, or has become faulty.

Does your drive need jumpering as Master by any chance? Some enclosures can be fussy.

Mike, that may be the case. i'm not too computer savy, could you tell me exactly what I need to do. And yes, it's my backup drive from my last computer. it has a ton of stuff on it. i built my new computer this past weekend and pulled this drive from my old computer so i could transfer everything on it to my new HD. Its been working fine for the past few years and when i hook it back to my old computer it works fine. So I know the drive is working.

OK, I finally got it to work. Thanx for yalls help. I didnt know what to do till I put everything together that yall suggested. I had to go into DM and activate the drive. it took some fiddling around till i figured it out. I never had to do this with my old computer. i would just recognize it and I would see it in my computer as an additional drive. Well, not his specific one, but another portable drive i had. thanx again.
