I have a Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD1200BEVE) 120Gb laptop converted to an external HD by some I/O magic Hardware that connects to the comp via USB.

Recently i havent been able to access it. It started out that i had had to switch the usb ports it was connected to before it would show up.

But today i plugged it in and did all the usb switching but it never showed. like always it told me that there was a USB mass storage device plugged in.

i can hear the stuff inside spinning, but nothing works

I would get a recovery download from WD site, but i cant access te actual HD.

SO! any help?

Perhaps it's on the edge of insufficient power and the USB ports you're using can't provide what it needs? Some external kits come with two USB cables to connect in parallel just to get enough power to run the drive. Have you changed to a different cable? A different port?

well its the usb that connects 2x in the computer and once in th actual HD.
I think the HD is dead. This is the same one that formatted itself for no particular reason, while in windows.

so it wouldnt be too surprising. just maddening

If you can get hold of a 2.5" IDE ribbon cable or a suitable adapter, take it out of the external case and link it to your secondary IDE channel. If it's okay you'll be able to access it in Windows Explorer or see it in Disk Management. I can't think of any easier test but it needs a connector to do it.
