When you are advised that the hard drive needs to be fragmented, it means that there are bits of information fragmented throughout your hard drive. By fragmenting, you align the information in logical order thereby saving hard drive space/

If you are using the built it defragmenter, they will analyze the drive you select and tell you whether or not you need to defragment it. Alternatively you can schedule an automatic defragmenter to run in the background and proactively defragment whenever needed. A defragmented drive yeilds faster file access and smoother functioning of the system.

Default why defragment a hard drive?

Picture your hard drive like a big bookcase.

All the books nicely aligned in alphabetical order.

Now imaging people use said bookcase and take books in and out and over time them get all jumbled up.

A defrag is like putting the books (your files) all back in alpha order.

That way they can be found quicker and easier.

Simple. :D
