Hello ,The hard drive on my old (4 years) Tiny laptop never stops whirling after approx 15 mins of being switched on ! It has been like it for at least 2 years prompting me to buy a new solid state asus web book ,Heaven! But the old war horse simply carries on working and wirling ,each time it is used... It has an amd athlon xp-m and widows xp . If I could get it to be quiet, I would use it much more, has any one any ideas ,it is whirling at this very moment thanks

If you are using Windows Vista:

"Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings" then select "Change advanced power settings".

Go down to "Hard disk" and "Turn off hard disk after" and change the "Settings (minutes)" to 1.

If the machine doesn't have much Ram, it could be using the HDD a lot as virtual Ram.
A few years back, a lot of Laptops shipped with 512mb, which is barely adequate for XP and less than adequate for XP Pro.

If this is the case, try adding another stick of Ram.
