I am a novice to all this, but I have an old computer running on Windows ME. I want to get all my photos off it in case it dies, I have approximately 3500 of them. I was thinking that an external hard drive would be the best solution, but I am having trouble tracking one down. I also want to be able to transfer them onto Windows XP. Is an external hard drive the best option? If so, can I get one that will run on both operating systems, and possibly Vista as well? Or is there an easier way of getting copies of the photos? I have tried flash memory, but it didn't seem to like that. If I was to burn to CD it would probably take weeks to do as it is very slow, how many CD's would I need? Any advice gratefully received. Thank you!

Photo files are compatible with any operating system.

Best thing to use would be an external harddrive or a USB flash drive, both will require a USB port on the back or your PC.

I have been looking on the internet and alot of the external hard drives I have looked at say that they only operate on XP or later. Do I need one that specifically works on ME? I tried using a memory stick, but my computer wouldn't recognise it. I am very confused!

Nothing will say it supports ME, it came out in 97ish.

Some may work while others may not.

On reflection you are probably best burning them to CD, a normal CD holds 800MB.

Not trying to nit pick, but ME was released in 2000, hence the ME standing for Milenium Edition

Crossover Ethernet cable might be a bit more complex but work OK in this situation as well.

Beat me to it. If you have another computer, get it next to this one.
Set them both to the same network (I believe it's under control panel -> system), but different machine names.
Then reboot both. Connect them via a crossover / patch cable. They are relatively cheap especially since you do not need a hugely long one.
Then set the folders you need to share to copy the pictures.
Open the network folder and then copy... simple process.

Thanks for all the advice, it does sound complicated though using cables and renaming things. Is it as hard as it sounds as I don't have a great deal of computer knowledge?

If you already have a CD burner then that is the simplest option for you.

I am pretty sure ME will recognise the external hard drive, so that would be the easiest option.

Most external hard drives support Windows 98 and forward.
