I'm looking for a new way to safely save all my pics/data as you may have seen my previous thread regarding my hard drive failure.
I thought that a HD would be the answer but its clearly not that safe. I was wondering what other people use to save their important docs, are there programs that will automatically run through the night and do a backup. At the moment the only thing I can think to do is have the data on my PC and then on 2 external hard drives. I'm sure you can give me some better solutions to that. Thanks again. |

currently use a 500gb external HDD, and a windows home server. the WHS can also back up your PC/s overnight automatically. other than that, same as hybr!d suggested

I've just signed up with carbonite so I can keep my pics safe.

Online is a good solution, i tend to upload most of my pics to Facebook for friends and family, unintentionally doubles as a back up solution.

How safe is zipping files. I have an old backup of some pics which I want to put on the computer although theres not loads of space. Was thinking of getting them all and zipping them to save space. was just wondering tho do zip files corrupt often ?

Saving them on a hard drive defeats the purpose of a backup. If the HDD goes bad you loose your backups.
Keep them somewhere other than on your HDD. Some good solutions and information here. Data Loss - Recovery & Prevention |

Could also buy a cheap (comparatively speaking) 30gb SSD or something and put really important stuff on it if a USB drive isn't big enough.

DVDs aren't great because they can go bad.
USB pens are not bad but can just suddenly die. The best option now is just to get two dirt cheap new 100GB hard drives, or however big you need, put them in two cheap external enclosures, and copy all your files onto them, and store them in two different places. I would say that hard drives are probably the most reliable way of storing data now, especially if used in pairs, and looked after, not dropped etc. Many businesses / servers etc now back up all their data to hard drives, cheap and reliable and dead easy to backup to and restore data.

I normally back up crucial data twice ...... once to a seperate HDD and again on a DVDR.

As serverguy said DVDs can go bad, but less likely if you use quality disks, such as Verbatims or TYs, I find these to be very good. My System: Home Build
