As serverguy said DVDs can go bad, but less likely if you use quality disks, such as Verbatims or TYs, I find these to be very good.
And keep out of sunlight, I thought this was just a myth, and didn't really affect it too much.

Boy I learnt the hard way..

I lost a shed load of coursework..
When changing over PC I copied all files I needed to disc, and then STUPIDLY, reformatted the old PC, BEFORE putting them from the disc onto the new one, which I did a week or so of sunlight later

And this is England.. it was probably hardly that sunny during that week.. Unless all the dam rain magnified it specifically toward my CD's..
