Hello

I'd really appreciate some help here. I think I'm going out of my mind.

I run Windows XP Home Edition on a Dell Dimension C521.
I turned on my computer yesterday and the sound didn't work. It appears to play audio files since I can see the track timer thing going along as normal, but I hear nothing from my speakers. It's not a problem with my speakers though, I tried listening through headphones and I still didn't hear anything. I did a system restore to when I knew the sound used to work, I did the troubleshooter which told me it couldn't fix my problem, I've done countless normal reboots, all my volume settings are fine, Windows recognizes my audio device (SigmaTel Audio), I've got no hardware conflicts, everything in my Device Manager works fine like it always has, I've tried reinstalling SigmaTel and the "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" in Sound, Video and Game Controllers, but this doesn't work, the only thing that needed updating was the SigmaTel thing and even then nothing happened. I haven't changed anything about my computer since the day before yesterday when the sound worked fine.

Sorry for reeling off all that but I've looked at lots of other forums as well as posts in this one and I've tried all those suggestions already.
Please help!

Have you tried completely removing all the drivers for the audio device then reinstalling them.
