Default Computer Speakers Hum

A friend gave me a nice pair of Infinity computer speakers but after hooking them up (one plugs into the other and then the other one connects to the AC for power and into the back of my PC) I get a loud HUM. I checked all the connections and I lowered my main volume levels on my PC. The speakers are even turned OFF but as soon as I connect the AC power cable I get the hum. I tried all three potential connections for the PC too, to make sure I had that right. I'd sure appreciate any help. I seem to have bad luck with computer speakers and I don't understand why they're so hard to work with, compared to regular stereo speakers. The cheap pair I just replaced them with never did that, and they were plugged into the same AC outlet and the same input on my PC!

Default Computer Speakers Hum

Check the immediate vicinity for any type of power source or transmitting device. Any type of hum or noise through pc speakers is quite often picked up from these types of things being in the same area. By power sources, that would include AC adaptors or cabled routers or modems. Transmitting devices could include, cordless telephones and wireless routers or modems. Nowdays virtually every soundcard has color coded jacks to make it easy to identify which jack is which. PC speaker jacks are always color coded light green
