i'm currently running Vista Home Premium x64.
does anyone know a really good sound card around $50?

i have a couple of choices of my own

http://www.ascendtech.us/itemdesc.as...CCREXFIXS00770
http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=SC7SB07900&c=pw

They are both Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 24-bit PCI Sound Cards.

But i noticed the 1st card has 7 plug-in jacks (2 of which on the right-hand side i don't even recognize) vs the 2nd card has only 4 plug-in jacks, not sure what's the deal there.

I'm trying to decide which card to get.

thanks for the help in advance

If it has 4 jacks, it can't be 7.1

7 Jacks, will be:
Line In, Mic In, Front Stereo, Center/Sub (one on each channel), Mid Stereo, Rear Stereo and S-P/DIF.

EDIT: Sorry, I just checked out the pic, actually it's a really odd selection. From Left to Right it's:
Mic In, Front Stereo, Mid Stereo, Center/Sub (one on each Channel), Rear Stereo, TosLink, Optical.

TBH, at the $50 mark, it's not worth buying a Sound card, unless of course your mobo doesn't have onboard.

Is it about Xtreme Audio card (low profile)? It is 7.1, 2 plugs are 3-channel. It's the orange and the grey. One of them has the left side channel, the 2nd has right side channel. Once that was strange for me, too

Inventer, Xtreme Audio isn't good audio card. It has audio codec, not an audio processor.
I found better card, with processor. I'm talking about Audigy 2ZS. Look at this: http://www.ascendtech.us/Itemdesc.as...AUD2ZS&eq=&Tp=

For 5.1 or 7.1 2ZS will be better than XA, because 2ZS has THX Console. It's needed if you want get really good sound.
Once I had XA... better suond has 2ZS.

Men, is it a joke? It's really great!
Allways is it worth to buy a pci sound card, because the pci card - even Live SB0100 has better sound than mobo integrated.

Inventer, which speakers/headphones are you going to connect to this card?

I meant at this sort of price tag compared to the modern onboard sound, I agree from a few years ago, they were crap, and you should stick a card in anything.

But current line mobos are way better now, and sound cards are not worth it if you're only going to spend $50

And about the 4 jacks 7.1 thing, how the hell does that work?! I've never heard of a triple channel jack, which would be needed seeing as it's anologue signal, in a digital signal like TosLink or S-P/DIF you can send multiple channels with one jack, fair enough, it's all binary.

But I thought only Stereo jacks were available, and therefore the most you could get would be 5.1

Actually thinking about it, 4 jack 7.1 would be possible with Stereo's, if you didn't have any line in's or mic in's.

1) Front Stereo
2) Mid Stereo
3) Rear Stereo
4) Center/SubW

Are you sure that's not what you meant?

I only said that wasn't possible in my first post because I thought manufacturers always liked to put an input of some kind on there.

Creative doesn't work right with Vista 64, so MY answer is NEITHER card. But if you are willing to pay 50 bucks for a card and only get 1/3 or less of the features you paid for, a card that will not work with 5.1 surround sound, then buy all means toss 50 bucks to Creative.

Oh and get prepared for the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be seeing it often. It will become your constant companion. You two will spend a lot of time together.

Forgot about that.

I thought it was all Vista though? As in x86 as well?

They claim to have "fixed" it for Vista x86. More of the features work although not nearly all. They actually have a driver for the x86 version. After poking around their forums a bit (most recently about 3 weeks ago) I still saw tons of people with tons of problems that weren't being solved. They were either blatantly ignored, or told it was THEIR hardware problems, not creative. I think you can get some decent sound out of 7.1 but still not 5.1. EF has no problems with his 2.1, butthen again he also wasn't concerned about the higher features of Creative like the CMSS and so on lol. He is one who would be happy with two tin cans and a string I think lol.

What really galls me though is that the major computer manufacturers continue to perpetrate this fraud by still using the half functional Creative sound cards with Vista in their computers. Had THEY put their foot down and collectively said, "We are not selling our customers half working JUNK sound cards, then Creative would write the drivers that work for Vista. it's not a skill level 3 task, one of their (Creatives) forum members fixed it 2 years ago. Creative threatened to sue him so he stopped......

Yeah, it's not on at all.

I don't see why they threatened legal action, the dude was helping them out!

It's like Mozilla with FireFox, I mean fair enough, it's Open Source, so it's slightly different. But there's a guy that writes code for an x64 version of FireFox called Minefield (Exactly the same, you install FF first and then Minefield, then Minefield will use most of the FF files, but follow it's own architectural coding, if you fancy it)

They should have employed him, not sued him.

I don't agree. Every soundcard is better than the onboard integrated.

I don't belive you, you compared those cards for example SB Live (or Audigy 2ZS, unimportant) with some new onboard audio....
