I recently bought a new Dell XPS 720 with a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic(D) Sound Card and with Dell A525 2.1 Stereo Speakers with Subwoofer. I have another set of speakers that I used to use on my old computer which I would like to hook up to work simultaneously with my current speakers. The older speakers are Dell A425 2.1 Stereo Speakers with a Subwoofer. How do I go about setting the two up.

I am also thinking about reformatting the XPS 720 to repartition the hard drive so I may end up needing to setup the original speakers as well. It would be easiest if I could install both immediately after reformatting and partitioning.

Hi Mailman

Welcome to TCF

I'm guessing both sets of speakers are Active, ie mains powered.
Route the new ones from the sound card and add just an old pair of normal speakers wired to an amplifier which is connected to the Line Out on the sound card.
If you want to add the old woofer then the amp will have to have that connection.

I'm a bit confused as to why this has anything to do with formatting though.

You could buy a splitter cable if you're not too concerned with the quality. Unless you have an extra old sound-card, I'm not sure if there is a way to do that using the existing ports on the Soundblaster.

As Wolfey has said though, why would your speakers matter for reformatting? The only driver you install is for the sound card, and they'll work with any speakers.

Thank you both wolfeymole and betta for your replies.

I was hoping for a solution without requiring me to go out and get anything (amplifier or splitter) but oh well. I don't think I want to get a splitter because the quality loss, however does anyone know of a good (and preferably not too expensive) amplifier. I appreciate everyone's replies.

Also, forgive me, I wasn't thinking when I referenced reformatting and setting up the speakers. You are correct, it would only affect the sound card and not the speakers.
