Followed your last suggestion---uninstalled audio, rebooted, the reinstalled. No change---still no sound. What next?

| Are there any audio ports on the front of the case? If so, make sure they are connected to the mobo.

Have 2 audio ports on the front of the case: 1 for "audio line in" and 1 for "microphone".Have no way to see how they are connected---but I have never used these ports.

Have a look at add/remove Programs within your control panel (make sure the show windows updates box is ticked) and see if service pack 3 or SP3 is installed. If it is, try uninstalling it. SP3 has known issues with a number of different drivers and it's just possible that that is what your problem is. :)

Do you have the original disks? Maybe you could load the drivers off of that. Or go to the HP website and see if they offer driver downloads.

Thanks, RIK---checked in control panel (see no "show windows updates" box to tick) See no evidence of a service pack 3 or SP3---only SP2. Apparently the System Recovery I did does not automatically bring SP3 with it. Appreciate your help.
