Microphone problem

Hi guys
Used my microphone a week or so ago flawlessly but everytime I plugged it in (including when I was in a game) it wouldnt work until i clicked ok on the auto detect window that comes up. Stupidly I checked the box that said 'do not detect devices in the future' thinking it would automatically work, but now it doesnt work at all!
Has anyone any idea how I can enable this again?
Thanks in advance
Jack
P.s I'm running xp professional

Have you looked in the sounds control panel to see if the mic volume is set low? (Audio tab)

May be a stupid question, but you did plug it into the Mic socket rather than the Line In one did you?
