You probably just need to install the Audio driver for the sound card.
Do you know what sound card you have..... or if it's on board sound, you will find the driver on the motherboard disk that came with your system.

Run Windows Update too - most of the time it can pull drivers for your hardware automatically, and cuts out the kerfuffle.

Tnx.
It is. i traded for my old computer a few years ago. It was used. Evrything was fine until my HD gave up. I put a HD from another computer with Win XP and everything is okay except audio. The motherboard's name is Asus A7V8X-X. How can I check if there is a sound card without opening the box? Tnx.

The Asus A7V8X-X Motherboard has on board sound :
SoundMAX Audio Driver version 5.12.01.3663 WHQL driver for Windows 98SE,ME,2000,XP

You can download the Audio driver here .... in the drop down windows :

in window 1 Select Motherboard
in window 2 select SocketA(462)
in window 3 select A7V8X-X

Click on the search button, then choose the OS ... you will be presented with all the drivers for your mobo, obviously you need the audio driver.
