I've been considering getting speakers with an optical digital input to use as it would provide a better sound quality, however I have a couple of problems with this.

1) I can't find any anywhere, so does anyone know of any?

2) Would it be worth the extra money for the quality and ease of use (1 cable from PC to speakers rather than several for surround sound, and same for DVD player)

3) Are there any kits that have this capability? Or do I need to buy everything separately (Amp, speakers etc)

Thanks

Generally you would need a suitable Amplifier or Receiver, that providesa digital optical input and any speakers would be attached to that.
Speakers are normally analogue devices ..... I'm not aware of any digital ones.

Yea, speakers are analogue, but I was meaning is there a kit with a built in amp that supports an optical input? As my current set of 5.1 speakers is a set and there is an amp and everything in the same case my the sub woofer, however only supports inputs via jacks or phono connectors.

I've looked around quite alot for speakers that support this, however I don't seem to be able to find any, however alot of DVD players and sound cards in PC's have optical audio outputs, so i thought they might exist, but maybe they only exist if I made the kit up myself with an amp and speakers seperatly.

Thanks anyway Philthomas, and if anyone else knows anything about these, please say

Check out Onkyo Amps ... these accept various types of digital input .... i.e SPDIF, TOS HDMI etc.
the speakers then hang on the Amp. Thesea re great for HD Video and 5.1 and DTS sound.
If you have a PS3, this will connect directly, giving you BlueRay playback and HD Audio. If your PC has HDMI out this can ve connected directly also. The Onkyo then has one HDMI output to the TV.

This type of system id good for HD Audio and HD Video, but is not cheap.
