Default Problem with Installing a sound card?

Hey,Basically i got myself a computer a few weeks back, which i've gradually been upgrading, with a new disk drive, and today i recieved a new (basic model) creative sound card. I currently believe the computer i am using to have no sound applications installed, at least when i attempt to play a c.d. it fails, and when i do dxdiag it says that there is no sound device available. So today i tried to install this sound card, i plugged the sound card into what i believe to be called a 'pci' slot and connected the cd wire into the appropriate socket. However when i then turned the computer on i was unable to get any signal, basically i could not get a picture to come up on my screen. (which is currently being done through my graphics card via a dvi to hdmi wire) I am quite baffled as to why this is, and any help would be greatly apprieciated!ThanksKrisIt doesn't seem to allow me to answer your messages - which seems pretty stupid - but i will answer them here.Windows is absolutely fine when the sound card is not plugged in, it is only when it is that i have a problem. I do have a spare pci slot that i haven't tried so i will give that a go now and let you know if it makes a difference! Thanks for all your responces so far!

Try another PCI slot.
